Employee connection platforms for large organizations: what to compare

Large organizations rarely need just one connection program. HR teams run coffee chats to break silos, onboarding buddies for new hires, mentoring for growth and ERG connections, and every employee should be able to take part, whether they work in Microsoft Teams, Slack or only email. Here are seven employee connection platforms compared on program breadth, reach, enterprise security, analytics and public prices, with their limits.

Based on public information as of By the RandomCoffee team

The short answer

  • A large organization that wants several connection programs (coffee chats, onboarding buddies, mentoring, ERG) on one platform, reaching every employee in Teams, Slack or email, with SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HRIS sync: RandomCoffee
  • Mentoring pathways for talent cohorts, with impact reporting on mobility and retention: Ten Thousand Coffees
  • A formal mentoring program run by HR or L&D, mostly inside Microsoft Teams: Together
  • A coffee chat app for Teams and Slack with public prices and a free start: CoffeePals
  • An organization that works mainly in Slack and wants intros plus onboarding messages: Donut
  • A flat monthly fee per band of members, with onboarding check-ins in Teams or Slack: LEAD
  • Communities and alumni networks that meet on Slack, Discord or email: Aphinity

How we compared them

An employee connection platform, as we define it here, is software that creates employee-to-employee connections through matching programs: coffee chats, onboarding buddies, mentoring, cross-team networking or ERG introductions. Communication intranets, recognition tools and team games are out of scope, even when they talk about connection; we explain why under Other tools we looked at. We started from the tools that AI assistants and published buyer guides name for these needs, kept the seven that match people and publish enough to be assessed for a large organization, and checked each one against the same six criteria. Every fact about a third-party tool, ratings included, comes from its own public pages or its Microsoft or Slack Marketplace listing.

  • Program breadth: how many connection programs run at once (coffee chats, onboarding buddies, mentoring, cross-team networking, ERG), and whether surveys and broadcasts sit on the same platform
  • Reach: whether every employee can take part in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email, including people without a collaboration tool
  • Enterprise security and HRIS: SOC 2, ISO 27001, SSO, SCIM, data hosting, and automatic sync with an HRIS such as Workday
  • Analytics and measurement: participation, meetings held, feedback and impact reporting
  • Admin effort: templates, where programs are set up, and the implementation support included
  • Public pricing: the entry price with its unit, copied from the vendor's pricing page

1. RandomCoffee

Our solution
Best for
Large organizations running several connection programs for every employee
What it does
RandomCoffee is an employee connection platform. It runs coffee chats, onboarding buddies, peer and reverse mentoring, cross-team networking and ERG connections side by side, in pairs or groups based on rules (department, location, seniority, skills, goals), with surveys and forms, broadcasts, pages and analytics in the same place. Every program reaches employees in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email, so people without a collaboration tool can take part too. In Teams, employees receive matches and reminders, accept, book a slot, pause or answer a survey, and HR admins set up programs in Teams or in the web app. RandomCoffee is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified, with SAML SSO, SCIM, HRIS sync (Workday, SAP SuccessFactors and more) and US or EU hosting. Trimble runs 17 RandomCoffee programs in parallel; in total, 1,250+ organizations in more than 30 countries use RandomCoffee.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Official app on Microsoft Marketplace (WA200004991): matches, reminders, booking, surveys, broadcasts and program setup inside Teams Slack: Official Slack app (Slack Marketplace); every program also runs by email
Security
SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, SAML 2.0 SSO, SCIM, GDPR ready; data hosting in the US or the EU
Pricing
Free plan; Pro from $19 per month billed annually
Limitations
  • Fewer public reviews than some competitors: the RandomCoffee Teams listing on Microsoft Marketplace shows a single rating.
  • SSO, a dedicated account manager and onboarding sessions are on the Enterprise plan; HRIS sync and SCIM start on Pro. Ten Thousand Coffees and Together include SSO in every plan.
  • No peer recognition or rewards module: an organization that wants kudos in the same app needs another tool.

2. Ten Thousand Coffees

Best for
Mentoring pathways for enterprise talent cohorts
What it does
Ten Thousand Coffees (10KC) is a mentoring and peer learning platform for enterprise talent programs. It runs Development Programs (1:1 and group mentoring, peer and senior-to-junior pairings), recurring Introductions, Office Hours with internal experts, and Pathways that combine them. Admins set required or preferred matching rules on HRIS segments, and an Impact Dashboard scores engagement, development, mobility and retention against a benchmark of other customers. Both plans include an implementation manager, a customer success manager and admin training.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Integration installed by uploading the 10KC app in the Teams admin center, one Teams channel per hub; members are matched in a Teams group chat with reminders and feedback requests; admins work in the 10KC web admin; Microsoft Marketplace listing: Not publicly listed Slack: Introductions and Office Hours only; Development Programs are not available in Slack. Email is the default channel
Security
SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, CSA STAR Level 1; SAML SSO or OpenID Connect in every plan; SCIM v2.0; Workday connector; Google Cloud hosting in the US or the EU
Pricing
Not publicly listed: Standard (up to 5,000 employees) and Extended (more than 5,000 employees), both by quote
Limitations
  • Pricing is on quote, and a free plan or trial is not publicly listed.
  • In Slack, only Introductions and Office Hours are available, not mentoring programs.
  • Built around mentoring cohorts: a dedicated onboarding buddy program and a broadcast module are not publicly listed, and ERGs appear as a matching criterion.

3. Together

Best for
Formal mentoring programs run by HR or L&D
What it does
Together is mentoring software: 1:1, group, peer, reverse, ERG and flash mentoring, in cohorts or evergreen, plus Colleague Connect for onboarding buddies and a separate Coffee Chats product. Matching is configurable with HRIS data, a Health Monitor flags pairs that are inactive or poorly rated, and reports cover enrollment, participation, goals and session feedback. Absorb Software, an LMS vendor, acquired Together in December 2024.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Official app that Together says brings every feature into Teams (Microsoft Marketplace WA200004731), 4.5/5 from 140 ratings; requires a Together account Slack: Notifications only (new matches, upcoming sessions)
Security
SOC 2 Type II; SAML SSO on all plans; HRIS integrations with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, BambooHR, UKG and Oracle; ISO 27001: Not publicly listed; Google Cloud hosting, region: Not publicly listed
Pricing
Custom pricing on quote, billed on actively matched users, implementation and support included
Limitations
  • Pricing is on quote, and a free plan or self-serve trial is not publicly listed: buying starts with a demo.
  • Built around formal mentoring; Coffee Chats is a separate product with single-session matches.
  • On Slack, Together documents notifications only.

What it does
CoffeePals automates connection programs inside Microsoft Teams and Slack, from random and cross-group coffee chats to onboarding buddies, mentoring cycles and CEO coffee lotteries. Paid plans include 35+ program templates and groups of up to 8 people. The Max plan adds anonymous pulse surveys, HRIS user import, data exports and AI summaries.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Official app, Microsoft 365 Certified (Microsoft Marketplace WA200003040), 4.3/5 from 34 ratings, updated September 2026 Slack: Yes (Slack Marketplace app)
Security
SOC 2 Type 2 (report under NDA from Pro); SSO with Entra ID or SAML 2.0 on Enterprise; HRIS user import on Max and Enterprise; ISO 27001: Not publicly listed for CoffeePals itself; hosting on AWS in the US
Pricing
Free up to 24 active users; Pro from $49 per month billed annually ($59 monthly) for 1 to 25 active users
Limitations
  • SSO is Enterprise-only, and HRIS user import and pulse surveys require the Max plan or above.
  • Data is hosted on AWS in the US (us-east-1); EU hosting option: Not publicly listed.
  • CoffeePals says participants are notified in Teams or Slack; participation by email: Not publicly listed.

Intros pairs people for coffee chats and cross-department connections, Watercooler and Celebrations post in channels, Journeys automates onboarding messages by Slack or email, and Shoutouts handles recognition. The Standard plan and above sync data from 50+ HRIS platforms. On Microsoft Teams, Donut's free app documents Intros only.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Official free app (Microsoft Marketplace WA200006072) documenting Intros only, 2.0/5 from 4 ratings; listing last updated October 2023 Slack: Native, Donut's main product; Slack Enterprise Grid multi-workspace channels on Premium
Security
SOC 2 Type II; sign-in through Slack OAuth; SAML not supported, per its Slack Marketplace listing; HRIS sync with 50+ systems from Standard; Donut says data is stored in the US
Pricing
Free plan; Standard from $74 per month billed annually ($89 monthly) for 1 to 24 participants; Microsoft Teams app $0 per month
Limitations
  • On Microsoft Teams, only Intros is documented; Journeys, Watercooler, Celebrations and Shoutouts on Teams: Not publicly listed.
  • Donut's Slack listing states SAML is not supported, and Donut says all data is stored in the US.
  • Mentoring relies on program templates; a mentor-mentee matching algorithm is not publicly listed.

6. LEAD

Best for
Flat monthly pricing with onboarding check-ins
What it does
LEAD, whose app is called LEAD.bot, runs coffee chats, cross-team matching, lotteries, peer and reverse mentoring and onboarding buddies in Slack and Teams, with pulse surveys and private post-meeting surveys. Onboarding with 30/60/90-day check-ins sits on the Engagement plan, and the Premium plan, for organizations of 500+ employees, adds organizational network analysis such as knowledge mapping and an expert finder. It charges a flat monthly fee per band of active members.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Official app (Microsoft Marketplace WA200001572), 5.0/5 from 3 ratings; listing last updated September 2023 Slack: Yes (Slack Marketplace app); Slack and Teams run as separate instances
Security
LEAD's pages differ on SOC 2 (a SOC 2 process under way on its trust page, 'SOC 2 compliant' on its virtual coffee page); SOC 2 report: Not publicly listed; SAML not supported, per its Slack Marketplace listing; GDPR and EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework; US hosting (AWS); HRIS import on request
Pricing
Free up to 24 people per round; Standard from $49 per month billed annually ($59 monthly) for 1 to 23 active members; Engagement from $99 per month
Limitations
  • LEAD's own pages differ on its SOC 2 status, a SOC 2 report is not publicly listed, and its Slack Marketplace listing states SAML is not supported, which can slow an enterprise security review.
  • Participation by email: Not publicly listed; users on Slack and Teams are matched only within their own platform.
  • The Teams listing has 3 ratings, and its last update is the oldest among the Teams apps in this list.

It serves employers, communities, universities and alumni networks, over Slack, Discord, email and Telegram, and its Pro plan allows unlimited programs, each with its own criteria and cadence.
Teams & Slack
Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Teams app: Not publicly listed Slack: Yes (channel messages, direct messages and slash commands; Slack Marketplace listing: Not publicly listed); email, Discord and Telegram also supported

What to look for in an employee connection platform

Plan for the second and third program. Coffee chats are often the first program, rarely the last. Within a year, many HR teams also want onboarding buddies for new hires, a mentoring cohort, ERG connections or cross-team networking after a reorganization or an acquisition. A platform that runs all of them on the same employee data saves you a second purchase and a second security review. Trimble, for example, runs 17 RandomCoffee programs in parallel: a global coffee club open to all employees, programs led by ERGs, initiatives for employees who joined through acquisitions, and in-person coffee programs at the office.

Check who can actually take part. In a large organization, not everyone works in the same tool. Some teams live in Microsoft Teams, others in Slack, and many frontline or field employees only have an email address. Ask each vendor which channels a participant can use from the first invitation to the follow-up survey, and whether people on different tools can join the same program. A tool that works only in Teams or only in Slack leaves part of the workforce out.

Match on purpose to break silos. Random pairing within one team rarely changes how departments work together. Look for matching rules on department, site, business unit, seniority or goals, so that a program deliberately crosses boundaries. At Henkel France, RandomCoffee started with the functions of one business unit, then spread across the site to connect employees of three branches.

Bring IT in early. IT will ask about SOC 2 or ISO 27001, SSO through Microsoft Entra ID or Okta, SCIM provisioning, where data is hosted and how employee data stays current. Among the tools above, RandomCoffee, Ten Thousand Coffees and Together publish SOC 2 Type II with SAML SSO, and RandomCoffee and Ten Thousand Coffees also hold ISO 27001 and offer US or EU hosting. If you run Workday or another HRIS, ask for an automatic sync rather than CSV imports. See our security page and integrations for what we share.

Decide how you will measure success. Participation is a start. Better signals are meetings that actually happened, feedback after each meeting, and how many connections cross teams or locations. Ten Thousand Coffees scores mentoring impact against a benchmark of other customers; most other tools, RandomCoffee included, report participation, satisfaction and program activity in a dashboard with exports.

Model the price at your real headcount. Entry prices are not comparable at a glance. RandomCoffee, CoffeePals, Donut and LEAD price by band of users, Aphinity per block of active users, and Ten Thousand Coffees and Together quote. A tool that is cheapest for 25 people is not always cheapest for 5,000. Check what sits behind the entry price too: SSO, HRIS sync and surveys are often on higher plans. Our pricing page shows every tier.

Free options and their trade-offs

A free plan is a good way to test a format with one team before a wider rollout. Running the program from a spreadsheet is free too, until the rounds and reminders add up: see RandomCoffee vs Excel, Google Sheets and ChatGPT.

  • RandomCoffee Free runs one program with one admin seat. See pricing for the limits and the Pro tiers.
  • CoffeePals Starter is free for up to 24 active users, with one program, pairs only and a weekly cadence.
  • LEAD Free covers up to 24 people per round on one matching schedule.
  • Donut has a free plan on Slack with up to 24 people per round, and lists its Teams app at no cost with Intros only.
  • Aphinity: a free plan is not publicly listed on its pricing page; it offers a 14-day free trial.

A free plan or self-serve trial is not publicly listed for Ten Thousand Coffees or Together.

When a specialist fits better

A broad platform is not always the right answer. If your project is a structured mentoring program for defined cohorts, with pathways, discussion guides and reports on mobility and retention, Ten Thousand Coffees and Together are built for exactly that, and both include implementation support in their contracts. If your organization works almost entirely in Slack and wants recognition and onboarding messages in the same app, Donut is a mature choice there. If your members are a community or an alumni network that meets on Discord or Telegram, Aphinity covers channels that enterprise tools do not.

The case for a complete platform is strongest when you run several programs at once, when part of the workforce is outside Teams or Slack, or when IT expects certified security and an HRIS sync.

Other tools we looked at

Several tools show up in answers about employee connection but solve a different problem. Halftime is a two-minute daily team game, and Halftime says it is not a coffee chat tool. Microsoft Viva Engage, Workvivo and Staffbase are communication intranets and enterprise social networks; this page covers tools that match employees into programs. HeyTaco, Bonusly and Workhuman are recognition tools, and HeyTaco says itself that it does not do coffee pairing.

Lighter coffee chat apps were left out because their public pages fall short of what an enterprise security review expects: BuddiesHR, the maker of Alfy, states that it is not SOC 2 certified, and SOC 2 and SSO details are not publicly listed for Dewdropz and CultureBot. We cover them in our Donut alternatives list. CoffeeChats.ai, which runs 1:1 intros over Slack, Discord, Telegram and email, has its own page: RandomCoffee vs CoffeeChats.ai. If you need enterprise mentoring software beyond Ten Thousand Coffees and Together, Chronus, Qooper and MentorcliQ also have Microsoft Teams apps.

How to choose

  1. If you are a large organization that wants several programs (coffee chats, onboarding buddies, mentoring, ERG) on one platform, with every employee reached in Teams, Slack or email and with SOC 2, ISO 27001, SCIM and HRIS sync, shortlist RandomCoffee.
  2. If mentoring for defined talent cohorts is the core project, and leadership expects reports on mobility and retention, talk to Ten Thousand Coffees or Together. Both sell by quote.
  3. If you want a coffee chat app inside Teams and Slack that one team can start for free, try CoffeePals.
  4. If your organization works mainly in Slack and wants intros, onboarding messages and recognition in one app, look at Donut.
  5. If you prefer one flat monthly fee per band of members and your security review does not require a SOC 2 report or SAML SSO, compare LEAD.
  6. If your members are a community or an alumni network that meets on Slack, Discord or email, Aphinity is a low-cost option.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best employee matching apps for large organizations?

It depends on how many programs you run and where your employees work. RandomCoffee runs coffee chats, onboarding buddies, mentoring, cross-team networking and ERG connections on one platform, in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email, with SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. Ten Thousand Coffees and Together focus on structured mentoring and sell by quote. CoffeePals is a coffee chat app for Teams and Slack with public prices, Donut is built for Slack, and LEAD charges a flat monthly fee per band of members.

How can a large organization break down silos between departments?

Run cross-team matching on purpose: match people from different departments, sites or business units, at a regular cadence, and measure how many meetings actually cross a boundary. At Henkel France, RandomCoffee created meetings across three branches, and 77% of them were cross-department. CoffeePals (Cross Group Coffees), LEAD (cross-group matching) and Donut (cross-department Intros) offer similar formats in Teams or Slack.

Which employee connection platforms integrate with Workday?

RandomCoffee syncs HRIS data such as Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG Pro and BambooHR on Pro and Enterprise, with Workday RaaS sync on Enterprise. Ten Thousand Coffees has a Workday connector, Together lists Workday among its HRIS integrations, and Donut syncs 50+ HRIS including Workday from its Standard plan. CoffeePals lists Workday among its connectors, with HRIS user import on Max. LEAD lists Workday as available on request, and Aphinity says it works alongside Workday; a native sync is not publicly listed.

What are the best tools to connect remote and hybrid employees across offices?

Look for matching rules on location and department, and for a tool that reaches people where they already work. RandomCoffee matches employees in pairs or groups by department, location, seniority, skills or goals, and runs every program in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email. Trimble runs 17 RandomCoffee programs in parallel, including a global coffee club and in-person coffee programs at the office. CoffeePals, LEAD and Donut also offer cross-group matching in Teams or Slack.

Which employee connection platforms are SOC 2 compliant and support SSO?

RandomCoffee (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, SAML SSO on Enterprise, SCIM from Pro, US or EU hosting), Ten Thousand Coffees (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, SAML or OpenID Connect in every plan, SCIM) and Together (SOC 2 Type II, SAML SSO on all plans) publish both. CoffeePals has SOC 2 Type 2 with SSO on Enterprise. Donut has SOC 2 Type II, but sign-in goes through Slack, and Donut's Slack listing states SAML is not supported. LEAD's own pages differ on its SOC 2 status and a SOC 2 report is not publicly listed. Aphinity says it is SOC 2 compliant; its report type is not publicly listed.

Is RandomCoffee only a simple coffee chat tool?

No. RandomCoffee is a complete employee connection platform: it runs coffee chats, onboarding buddies, peer and reverse mentoring with milestones and progress tracking, cross-team networking and ERG connections at the same time, with surveys, broadcasts, pages and analytics. It reaches employees in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email, and it is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified, with SAML SSO, SCIM and HRIS sync. Trimble runs 17 programs in parallel on RandomCoffee.
