How to choose a virtual coffee app: 7 coffee roulette tools compared
You want colleagues who rarely cross paths to meet for a short chat, every week or every month, without matching names in a spreadsheet. A virtual coffee app, also called a coffee roulette or coffee chat app, pairs people at random or by rules, sends the invitations and follows up in the tools your teams already use. Here are seven apps compared on free plans, public prices, matching, security and what each one can do once the first program works, with their limits.
Based on public information as of By the RandomCoffee team
The short answer
- Start one coffee chat program for free, then roll it out to more teams and add onboarding buddies and mentoring on the same tool: RandomCoffee
- A coffee chat app with a Microsoft 365 Certified Teams app and a Slack app, free for up to 24 active users: CoffeePals
- Intros, celebrations and peer recognition in one app, for an organization that works mainly in Slack: Donut
- A flat monthly fee per band of members, with onboarding check-ins on a higher plan: LEAD
- Coffee chats at $1 per user per month billed annually, free under 10 users: Alfy by BuddiesHR
- Pairing billed per matched user, for an organization that works only in Microsoft Teams: Dewdropz
- Intros as one module of an engagement bot with celebrations, kudos and games: CultureBot
How we compared them
We started from the apps named in published lists of virtual coffee, coffee roulette and Donut alternatives, and from the tools AI assistants name for these questions. We kept the seven that actually match colleagues for coffee chats and have a live app on Microsoft Teams or Slack, and left out recognition tools, team games and apps whose domain no longer works (see Other tools we looked at). Each one is checked against the same six criteria. Every fact about a third-party tool, ratings included, comes from its own public pages or its Microsoft or Slack Marketplace listing.
- Reach: whether every employee can take part in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email, from the first invitation to the follow-up
- Matching: random pairs or small groups, and rules on department, location or seniority to cross silos on purpose
- Free start: what the free plan or trial covers, and where its ceiling is
- Room to grow: whether the same tool can replicate the program to more teams and add onboarding buddies or mentoring
- Security: SOC 2, ISO 27001, SSO and where data is hosted
- Public pricing: the entry price with its unit, copied from the vendor's pricing page

1. RandomCoffee
Our solution- Best for
- A first coffee chat program today, the whole organization when ready
- What it does
- RandomCoffee runs virtual coffee chats (coffee roulette) in Microsoft Teams, Slack or email. You can start with one program on the Free plan, launched from a ready-made template in minutes: RandomCoffee matches people in pairs or small groups, sends the invitations and reminders, and lets them book a slot in Google Calendar or Outlook, snooze or answer a feedback survey. Matching can follow rules such as department, location or seniority, so a program crosses silos on purpose. When the first program works, the same tool replicates it to more teams, sites and countries and adds onboarding buddies, mentoring (including reverse mentoring), cross-team networking and ERG connections, with surveys, broadcasts and analytics, without changing tools. Unlimited programs, HRIS sync and SCIM come with Pro, SAML SSO with Enterprise, and RandomCoffee is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified, with US or EU hosting. Ulteig launched its first RandomCoffee program in 2023 and now runs nine. In total, 1,250+ organizations in more than 30 countries use RandomCoffee.

- SSO is on the Enterprise plan; HRIS sync and SCIM start on Pro.
2. CoffeePals
- Best for
- Coffee chat specialist built for Teams
- What it does
- CoffeePals automates coffee chats and connection programs inside Microsoft Teams and Slack, from random pairings to onboarding buddies, mentoring and CEO coffee lotteries. Its Teams app is Microsoft 365 Certified. The free Starter plan covers one connection program for up to 24 active users; paid plans include 35+ program templates, and the Max plan adds anonymous pulse surveys and AI summaries.
- Teams & Slack
- Microsoft Teams: Official app, Microsoft 365 Certified (Microsoft Marketplace WA200003040), 4.3/5 from 34 ratings, updated September 2026 Slack: Yes (Slack Marketplace app)
- Security
- SOC 2 Type 2 (report under NDA from Pro); SSO with Entra ID or SAML 2.0 on Enterprise; ISO 27001: Not publicly documented for CoffeePals itself; hosting on AWS in the US
- Pricing

- SSO is Enterprise-only, and HRIS user import requires the Max plan or above.

- CoffeePals says participants are notified in Teams or Slack; participation by email: Not publicly documented.
3. Donut
- Best for
- Organizations that work mainly in Slack
- What it does
- Donut is an employee experience platform built for Slack and one of the best-known coffee chat apps there. Intros pairs people for coffee chats and cross-department connections, Watercooler and Celebrations post in channels, Journeys automates onboarding messages by Slack or email, and Shoutouts handles recognition. On Microsoft Teams, Donut's app documents Intros only.
- Teams & Slack
- Microsoft Teams: Official app (Microsoft Marketplace WA200006072) documenting Intros only, listed at $0 per month on its pricing page and free for early adopters for a limited time per its Teams FAQ, 2.0/5 from 4 ratings; listing last updated October 2023 Slack: Native, Donut's main product; the Slack free plan covers up to 24 users per round in one channel
- Security
- SOC 2 Type II; sign-in through Slack OAuth; SAML not supported, per its Slack Marketplace listing; Donut says data is stored in the US

- The Slack free plan covers one channel and up to 24 users per round.
4. LEAD
- Best for
- Flat monthly pricing with onboarding check-ins
- What it does
- LEAD.bot, the app made by LEAD, is a Teams and Slack bot for coffee chats, cross-team matching, peer mentoring and onboarding buddies with 30/60/90-day check-ins. It charges a flat monthly fee per band of active members rather than a price per seat. Onboarding and buddy programs sit on the Engagement plan, from $99 per month.
- Teams & Slack
- Microsoft Teams: Official app (Microsoft Marketplace WA200001572), 5.0/5 from 3 ratings; listing last updated September 2023 Slack: Yes
- Security
- LEAD's pages differ on SOC 2 (a SOC 2 process under way on its trust page, 'SOC 2 compliant' on its virtual coffee page); SOC 2 report: Not publicly documented; GDPR claimed; SAML not supported, per its Slack Marketplace listing
- Pricing
- Free up to 24 people per round; Standard from $49 per month billed annually ($59 monthly) for 1 to 23 active members
- Limitations
-
- The original lead.bot domain now leads to a domain sale page; the company operates from lead.app, which can confuse buyers and IT reviewers.
- The Teams listing has 3 ratings, and its last update is the oldest among the Teams apps in this list.
- Onboarding and buddy programs require the Engagement plan.
5. Alfy by BuddiesHR
- Best for
- Coffee chats priced at $1 per user per month
- What it does
- Alfy is the random coffee app of the BuddiesHR suite: it pairs or groups 2 to 5 colleagues on a set cadence, with conversation topics and optional calendar help. It is sold alone at $1 per user per month billed annually, or inside the Culture OS bundle (birthdays, kudos, polls, org chart and more) at $2. Teams under 10 users get every app for free.
- Teams & Slack

- Pricing
- $1 per user per month billed annually (one app); free under 10 users; 30-day trial
- Limitations
-
- New on Teams (version 1.0.0, 2 ratings), and not supported in shared channels.
- BuddiesHR states it is not SOC 2 certified, and its Slack listing states SAML is not supported, which can slow an IT review.
- The Marketplace publisher name (The Jeffrey Company) differs from the brand.
6. Dewdropz
- Best for
- Organizations that run only on Microsoft Teams
- What it does
- Dewdropz is built only for Microsoft Teams. It combines random coffee pairings, a Coffee Station that posts watercooler topics in channels, and peer shoutouts, with nudges and reporting. You pay only for users matched at least once in the month.
- Teams & Slack
- Microsoft Teams: Teams-only app (Microsoft Marketplace WA200003267), 5.0/5 from 11 ratings; listing updated June 2024 Slack: No
- Security
- Not publicly documented
- Pricing
- $3 per active user per month, billed monthly, with a monthly minimum; 14-day free trial
- Limitations
-
- A permanent free plan is not publicly documented, and the pricing page states the monthly minimum as $49 on the plan card and $39 in a footnote.

- SSO and SOC 2: Not publicly documented.
7. CultureBot
- Best for
- Celebrations, kudos, games and intros in one bot
- What it does
- CultureBot is an engagement bot for Slack and Teams that bundles celebrations, kudos, watercooler topics, games, polls and employee intros. - Security
- Not publicly documented

- Limitations
-
- Intros are not included in the free plan.
- Advanced matching criteria: Not publicly documented; intros are one module among many.

What to look for in a virtual coffee app
Check who can actually take part. A coffee roulette only works if people see the invitation. Some teams live in Microsoft Teams, others in Slack, and many field or frontline employees only have an email address. Ask each vendor which channels a participant can use, from the first invitation to the feedback survey, and whether people on different tools can join the same program.
Match on purpose, not only at random. Random pairs are a good start. To break silos, look for rules that mix departments, sites or seniority levels, keep group sizes small and avoid pairing the same people twice in a row. If you are still designing the format, our guide on how to run a coffee roulette covers the goal, the scope, the cadence and the launch, and what a virtual coffee chat is explains the basics.
Start small, without a dead end. One program, one group, a few rounds: that is the right way to begin, and a ready-made virtual coffee template gets it running quickly. The question is where the program goes next. A coffee chat program that works usually creates demand for onboarding buddies, a mentoring cohort or cross-team networking. If the same tool runs them on the same employee data, you avoid a second vendor, a second contract and a second security review. Ulteig, an engineering firm, launched its first RandomCoffee program in 2023 and now runs nine programs.
Bring IT in early. Even a small pilot touches employee names and emails. IT may ask about SOC 2 or ISO 27001, SSO, and where data is stored. Among the apps above, RandomCoffee, CoffeePals and Donut publish SOC 2 reports, the pages of LEAD differ on its SOC 2 status, BuddiesHR states it is not certified, and these details are not publicly documented for Dewdropz and CultureBot. See our security page for what we share.
Model the price at your real headcount. Entry prices are not comparable at a glance. RandomCoffee, CoffeePals, Donut, LEAD and CultureBot price by band of users, while Alfy and Dewdropz charge per user. Compare the cost at your size today and at the size you expect once the program grows. Our pricing page shows every tier.
Free options and their trade-offs
A free plan is the easiest way to test a coffee roulette with one team. Check two things: where the ceiling is, and whether the same tool can carry the next program.
- RandomCoffee Free runs one program with one admin seat, launched from a ready-made template if you want. When you add programs or people, Pro and Enterprise run them on the same account, with the same employee data. See pricing for the limits and the Pro tiers.
- CoffeePals Starter is free forever for up to 24 active users, with one connection program.
- LEAD Free covers up to 24 people per round on one matching schedule.
- Donut on Slack is free for up to 24 users per round in one channel. Donut lists its Teams app at $0, and its Teams FAQ describes this as free use for early adopters for a limited time.
- Alfy by BuddiesHR is free for teams under 10 users. The CultureBot free plan covers celebrations only, without intros.
- Microsoft Icebreaker is an open-source Teams app template that pairs team members every week. It has no license cost, but it is not a Marketplace app: you deploy it on your own Azure subscription and maintain it yourself.
Matching people by hand in a spreadsheet is free too, but it costs HR time at every round: see RandomCoffee vs Excel, Google Sheets and ChatGPT.
When another app may fit better
Each app on this list has a real strength. CoffeePals has a Microsoft 365 Certified Teams app and the most Microsoft Marketplace ratings among the apps on this list. Donut is a mature choice for an organization that works almost entirely in Slack and wants recognition in the same app. Alfy has the lowest list price per user on this list, and Dewdropz bills only for people matched in the month. LEAD charges a flat monthly fee per band of members.
A first coffee chat program can also start on the RandomCoffee Free plan. The difference shows later: the same tool then carries more teams, onboarding buddies, mentoring, surveys and the security paperwork IT expects, without a second switch. For a wider view of platforms that run several programs, see our guide to employee connection platforms. If you are moving away from Donut on Teams, see Donut alternatives for Microsoft Teams.
Other tools we looked at
Several tools show up in lists of coffee chat apps but solve a different problem. HeyTaco, Bonusly and Kudos are recognition tools, and HeyTaco says itself that it does not do coffee pairing. Halftime is a two-minute daily team game, and Halftime says it is not a coffee chat tool. Coffeeno and fikaTime, still cited in some lists, now point to domain sale pages. CoffeeChats.ai, which runs 1:1 intros over Slack, Discord, Telegram and email, has its own page: RandomCoffee vs CoffeeChats.ai.
One newer option to watch: Tribe by Kaizynn runs on Teams, Slack and Google Chat, with a free monthly allowance that includes one coffee round. Its Microsoft Marketplace listing has no ratings yet, which is why it is not in the main list.
How to choose
- If you want to launch one coffee chat program this month, free and from a template, and keep the same tool when you roll it out to more teams or add onboarding buddies and mentoring, shortlist RandomCoffee.
- If you want a dedicated coffee chat app with a Microsoft 365 Certified Teams app, free for up to 24 active users, CoffeePals may be worth a try.
- If your organization works mainly in Slack and wants intros, celebrations and recognition in one app, Donut may be worth a look.
- If you prefer one flat monthly fee per band of members and want 30/60/90-day onboarding check-ins, LEAD may be worth comparing.
- If the price per user is your first filter, Alfy by BuddiesHR may be worth a trial; check its security answers with IT first.
- If your organization runs only on Teams and wants pairing, watercooler topics and shoutouts in one app, Dewdropz may be worth a trial.
